Question: Are you living a life that you choose?
WOW. What a powerful question, right? It can be a really scary question. It can be question that is hard to admit honestly, or maybe it’s not. That’s up to you to decide what this question triggers for you.
All day long we are making choices. Our lives are a result of all of our choices put together, which creates our current realities. I know that there are times were it has felt like I don’t have a choice. I’ve been there and done that. The reality is that we do and we always will have the final say with any decision that we make. Again, this can sound overwhelming or it could be great news, depending on your perspective to take action and make solid choices for yourself.
I’m not sure how one can be a happy and fulfilled person if you’re not living a life that you choose. Actually, I can’t imagine it to be possible because it’s going against your truth. This is why the question above is such a rich one. It’s simply stated, but there is so much being asked. If you are living a life you choose, Bravo, that’s pointing toward your ability to be aware of your wants, needs and respecting your truth. If you’re not, and can actually admit that, Bravo to you too, because that is the first step toward making different choices so you can live a reality that is more truthful to you.
How do you know when you are living a life you choose? Well, the most straight forward and simple thing I can say to that is: It feels good. Meaning, generally speaking, that it feels, enjoyable, rich, connective, exciting, fulfilling, interesting, etc. How do you know when you’re living a life that you don’t choose? Simply put: It doesn’t feel good. It tends to feel hard, your questioning “it” often, you feel tired, things are not interesting to you. Everyone is different, but how you feel is only for you to define and judge. If you dig deep, you will know what your answer is to this question. When you are living a life untrue to you, it will come out not only via your feelings, but also through your physical being. We are like machines where everything is connected. If one area is “down,” you eventually will see the toll it is taking somewhere else. Be mindful of this.
As overwhelming as this all can seem, here is the good news: Just as choice by choice got you to where you are now, choice by choice can also lead you somewhere very different. It’s not impossible to change your life direction, ever. No matter how deep into a life you are that doesn’t feel right. I’m not saying it’s going to be a breeze. I’m just letting you know that it’s not impossible. People have done it and continue to do it. You can do it.
No matter where you fall in all of this, an action to take, whether you feel on track or not, is to start making choices that feel good. Just start. If you feel like you’ve missed “the boat” of your life journey, let me remind you that a “boat” leaves every 5 minutes. I heard that one the other day and found it, oddly, to be really helpful. It’s not over until it’s over, so get going and start making choice by choice that feels more in sync and true to who you are. Things will follow from there.
