Follow your heart is a statement we’ve all heard. It’s nothing new, right? Perhaps we say it to a friend or to ourselves when we need a little pick me up. This phrase seems to be stated in multiple ways in our world: follow your passion, do what you desire, follow your truth, live your dream, do what makes you happy, the list goes on. For me, all these phrases fall under the same umbrella, so however this phrase speaks to you, here is my blurb on getting exactly what you want for your life and then some.
Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to podcasts, reading books and blogs, watching interviews and documentaries about people who really are living their dream. Meaning, they are doing, living and experiencing what was once only a thought and vision in their mind. Now, it’s their reality. People are really making exactly what they want appear in their life.
This happens; It’s real.
Beyond being inspired from watching, listening and taking all this in, what I’m hearing has truly motivated me to get as clear as possible about what I want for myself. Sure, I have thought about this before, after all, I’ve been in the field of self help for over 15 years now. So, yes, I have absolutely contemplated this question many times in the past, but never to the degree I am right now, which is where things have become more interesting lately.
I’m seeing that the results that have entered my life recently are an accurate reflection of my clear and direct words, conversations and intentions that I have been actively and mindfully “putting out there.” Simply said, the effort I’m putting into getting clear on my desires is being matched with what’s showing up in my life. As cheesy as it might be to say, it’s been magical to experience how pieces of my vision are popping up on the daily due to me talking about it, thinking about it and visualizing about it regularly. These pieces of the puzzle that show up through random coincidences, little whispers, unexpected moments among other “I can’t even describe it in words kind of happenings” keep my belief and desire strong to continue to go after what I want. What’s different for me this time is that I’ve made the conscious decision to identify clearly what I want and I believe that I can have it. (I’ve never felt this clear and spent so much energy thinking about it.) I believe that being extremely focused paired with a strong belief that I can have what I want has led to the recent happenings in my life. I’m going after it, self limiting beliefs and other people’s doubts aside.
I’m a huge believer that what you focus on and what you put out into the world will be reflected back to you. It’s the notion of ebb and flow at play. Here are some tips to “try on” if you’re interested in being the true visionary that you’re meant to be for your life.
GET CRYSTAL CLEAR
I can’t tell you enough how hard this part was and is still at times for me. “What do you want?” What a huge and intimidating question that can easily overwhelm me, leaving me feeling frustrated, lost and scattered. So, yes, it can be a tough question to answer off the bat and without a lot of thought. If you don’t find that a hard question, I admire that. If it is, I can totally relate to you and here is what helped me: Creating a space and time where I dedicated toward writing, journaling, listing and thinking about what my top wants, priorities and dreams are was essential toward getting clear. I needed to put time and energy into deeply thinking about the truth of what my desires are. I took my time with this. I did not rush myself. I took it seriously and I was really truthful about what my dreams are for me versus what others may want for me, which can be so hard to separate.
* The book The Passion Test by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood helped me with this. This book presents a very well structured way of how to create and prioritize your wants. I found it really helpful.
Think about your dream life…. A LOT. Visualize about it. See it in your mind. Make up stories about how amazing it is. Play a movie in your head about it. Talk about it. (To those that will encourage you and not knock your dreams.) Research about it. Dork out about it. Create a Pinterest board about it. Meditate about it. Do this daily. Do this often. Have extreme focus that reinforces, both to yourself and to the world, that you are serious about making what you want happen. Be consistent with your focus. Hold onto it. Don’t take a break from it. Keep it going and flowing.
DREAM WITHOUT LOGIC
This can be a tough one because we are so ingrained to think practically and logically. Please push that aside for a moment because I want you to allow yourself to just dream. Get away from your logical mind that wants to tell you it’s not possible and harass you with the “how” of how your dreams are going to play out. Put aside the how it’s going to happen. Put aside trying to figure it out. Put aside limiting beliefs that are keeping you small. Just dream. Even if for 5 minutes, just allow yourself the space to reject all thoughts about how “it’s not practical.” (That’s crap.) This is so very important and I understand how it can be so very foreign and difficult to do..............but try.
CREATE A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT
Surround yourself with images, external objects, books, movies, things to do, etc. that resemble, remind you of and are connected to what you want. For example: What do I have a picture of on my refrigerator? Answer: Some chick free diving with a sea turtle in some tropical, underwater paradise. Why? Because I want more of this in my life and visualize more of this in my future. Why? Because it makes me feel more connected to who I truly am, which makes me happy. Also, notice when your out in the world and you see, hear or experience something that reminds you of your dreams. Value that moment. Have enough awareness to notice that moment. Don’t dismiss that moment. Let that moment remind you that what you want is possible, after all, your seeing and being reminded of it aren’t you? Trust that.
I believe with everything in me that you can have what you want. You can. Stop telling yourself that you can’t. However, just like anything worth while, you have to be patient and do the work. It takes work to be living an amazing life, but it’s not awful work. It’s work that has the strong potential to enhance your self identity and focus for your life. Your heart is your guide, so follow it. Get in tune with what it wants and take action toward making your wants happen. Remember that it’s ALL so possible.
