I’ve been thinking a lot about change. For me, change is something that I become initially aware of through a gut feeling, inner voice or intuition. It can begin as a whisper and, if the desire is true and strong, that whisper grows louder and louder within me until it becomes uncomfortable to avoid. This change can be associated with anything: A job, an environment, a city, a routine, a habit, anything. Sometimes it’s really hard for me to acknowledge the yearning for change because change pushes me to have to go outside my comfort zone and can feel intimidating. I think a lot of us struggle with it, which is why we can become stagnant and live smaller lives than we are meant for.
I can become hell bent that things need to change in order for things to feel internally better. I can convince myself of this and there are still moments that I do. Although, my more grounded, wiser self knows that this is untrue. It’s really easy to get caught in “the grass will be greener when” (fill in the blank. ) Things will be better when I move. Things will be better when I have a yoga body. Things will be better when I have a new job or location freedom within my job. Things will be better when I get the man on the white shiny horse. Blah, blah, blah.
In all reality, what I do know, within the deepest part of me, is that everything begins and ends with ourselves. It can be true and real that you’re currently not in an “ideal” situation. After all, life is a constant growing adventure. We are all constantly works in progress; forever growing and changing. What I can say is that believing that an external happening would make everything better is normally not the case. So, much of getting to a different place within has to do with your internal stuff: your mindset, your beliefs, your will to see a different perspective, your ability to look at what is going right.
I’m all about change and think that learning to be able to ebb and flow with change is a super healthy ability. Although, it’s also important to learn how to continue to enjoy and get the most out of your current situation until it is time for change. Until life or you comes up with an alternative game plan there is always something to learn and gain from being in your current situation. It’s your job to be open enough to discover that. Doing your best to keep yourself positive will allow good things, positive happenings and unexpected possibilities to show up and nudge you into change. Much of the time, if you have the intention and want for something new, and you can remain positive, life will work with you to create change. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a forceful, hard and miserable process. Often when there is so much resistance, perhaps you’re pushing too hard in the wrong direction.
Change is a wonderful want. I’ve always admired people that can jump into a new city, a new job, a new way of being and embrace it whole heartedly. It’s a sign of growth when you feel the nudge of change. Embrace it. Acknowledge that it’s there. Get excited with the possibilities of what can be and come. When you can allow yourself to be and live in that space, the meantime can be enjoyable versus “get me out of here, I’m over it, miserable.”
One thing that will always be a constant in life is change. So embrace the feeling and know that, no matter what, it’s coming. Whether you’re calling on it or not. Enjoy the present because one thing that’s a fact of life and inevitable is change.
